The version of SQL Server 2012 was supplemented by the availability group AlwaysOn and columnstore index. Running in-memory OLTP, and integration with hybrid cloud were appeared in SQL Server 2014.
After the release of SQL Server 2016 it has left no doubt that SQL Server is a complete enterprise platform for data processing, which is constantly being improved. There are following major improvements.
- Taking into consideration the increasingly tight integration with the cloud and widely known vulnerabilities disclosed by companies such as Home Depot and Target, it is not surprising that the security issue became a major in the new release of SQL Server 2016. Thanks to new security features such as Encrypted Always and protection at the row level, SQL Server reinforces its reputation as the most protected corporate databases.
- In previous versions of SQL Server Microsoft presented several implemented in-memory technologies, such as the columnstore index and the mechanism of running in-memory OLTP. Releasing a version of SQL Server 2016 Microsoft continued improvement implemented in-memory technologies, providing greater compatibility with requests based on traditional disks.
- Big Data and Analytics. Big Data and new forms of intelligence are two other very promising trend in the development of databases.
